What Is Purpose, and How to Find It
“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” — Mark Twain
The drive to find purpose and meaning in life is shared across humanity. Purpose is a reason for getting up each morning, for making our choices, and investing our time as we choose. Purpose doesn’t have to be about money, success, charity, or family. It doesn’t have to be about achievements or accolades. But it does have to be your motivator; what drives and inspires you. Make no mistake, purpose will be different for everyone and will very likely change throughout your life. Ultimately, purpose gives us clarity, meaning, and helps us better understand ourselves.
How to Find Your Purpose
Let’s get one thing straightfirst: purpose doesn’t just find us. It doesn’t knock on our door and introduce itself, or come in the form of a magic pill. Purpose, like all good things in life, is earned, which leaves many of us wondering how to find purpose in our daily activities. The “purpose puzzle” takes soul searching, which can be challenging. But no matter how young or old you are, you can find purpose and add meaning to your life.
Start with Introspection
Purpose can be developed through a deeper understanding of yourself. Everyone’s purpose is different, so it’s important to identify where you shine, and find your path.
- Consider the challenges you have faced in your own life, and what you did to overcome them. Think about what strengths helped you conquer said challenges, and how those strengths can be applied elsewhere to make life better for others.
- Think about your own character traits and skills. Make a list of everything you’re good at, everything you enjoy, and define your keyvalues. Think about which of these items match up or work together. Perhaps you are a brave and protective character, and are deeply invested in your community.Would a role as a police officer work for you? Or is your purpose achieved through other areas of community service?
- Ask family, teachers, coworkers, and friends for their input – they’ll likely identify plenty of traits you haven’t even considered.
- Once you have several ideas, keep working to match them with your objectives, and create lists of opportunities that you see potential in. These include jobs that fit your purpose or opportunities you may not have previously considered.Highlight a few favorites that will impact your direction, and help you make decisions now.
Connect with Inspirational People
The people who surround us make a big difference in terms of how we see ourselves, and the goals we set. Connect with people who will help you find your purpose and support you as you grow small ideas into successfulproductivity.
- Connect with likeminded people in the same industry as you, or others in totally different walks of life who are inspirational.
- Spark up mentor-based relationships with those who can help you develop, or provide you with new opportunities. They may have additional tips on how you can find a job that is matched to your purpose.
- Surround yourself with peers that are also looking for purpose, who can help you solve your own puzzle. These people might become your classmates when you both find a mode of study that brings you purpose, or future business partners, creating new jobs with purpose for the next generation. They might evenspark an idea in you, 10 years down the line.
Expand Your Comfort Zone
For many of us, finding our purpose is only the first step. Additional challenges come with changing careers, goals, or study direction.
Start simple: apply for your dream job, or take a class to figure out if it’s for you. Talk to people already in the role, ask them for interview advice, and get a new role lined up that’s closer to where you want to be. It’s ok if reaching your ultimate goals take time; with hard work and preparation, you’re more likely to succeed in the long run.
Don’t Force Your Purpose, Find It
You may be at a point in your life where the outside world hasn’t yet shaped your aspirations, and that’s fine. People of all ages wonder how to find purpose. Even after school, even after that first job, even after we start making good money, we may still be searching for that calling. But does that mean that we become complacent as we navigate the purpose puzzle? Not at all. We have to make it happen, leave that comfort zone and mentally test ourselves. Discovering what you’re passionate about in lifetakes work, effort and time, but it’s worth it.
